I remember when I found out I was having a girl I just went crazy, pinning and planning a million little dresses but then when I actually did start sewing for her I think I made her like one dress and then I had more fun sewing her tiny tees and leggings... I can't girl! haha
The Knot Dress was one of the first dresses I found, I can't remember if I bought it in a bundle or something but I do know that I've had it for a while and was waiting and waiting for Eddie to get big enough to sew it. Well she's sort of a size 2, but she's not big enough to fill this dress completely. Which is fine and she doesn't really care a whole lot because HELLO. Frozen fabric! And it's purple which is just as good as pink in her books!
Project Run & Play are having a super cute sew along right now and the Knot Dress was the chosen dress for the month. Good as incentive as any, right? Also it's free now!
One of Eddie's besties happens to be the little sister of Vincent's bestie (aka his proclaimed life partner, lol), and she has a very talented sewing grandmother who sewed her up a pretty blue dress from Frozen fabric. Eddie watched Isla twirl a little then turned to me and asked, "Mummy I want a Frozen Dess pease."
It was the first time she's actually ever asked me to sew her something, so of course I'm going to oblige! She'd picked out some Frozen fabric a little while ago, and while it's not my favourite fabric ever I still sewed it up. Here's the thing, I'll sew up Star Wars and Batman licensed fabric for Vin dawg, easy. But I don't just grab ANY Star Wars or Batman fabric, I actually grab prints that i like (although it;s not difficult since I genuinely love those two fandoms!) Sometimes I don't like a Star Wars print, so I dont buy it. I'm trying to say that I don't just grab stuff because it's Star Wars! So I was looking at this fabric going, would I love it more if it was Darth Vader and Stormie heads instead of Anna and Olaf? Answer is, probably not. I don't like the colour and I don't like the swirly stuff going on, but regardless, my daughter LOVES it. So that's what I have to do now, learn to suck it up and sew things she will love to wear!
I had this lilac brushed cotton in my stash for a while. I'm sure I got it from the op shop or in a big bag of fabric given to me. I kept it because I thought it would be cute pyjamas but it was the perfect amount and the perfect colour to make a simple gathered skirt to add to the Knot dress bodice. I didn't follow the instructions for the skirt, just cut a huge big rectangle of fabric, hemmed it then gathered it to the bodice. I fear no gathers now.
I couldn't really get a clear shot of the back because miss just wanted to go play outside, but it does just look like her entire back is knots and ties. I'm 100% sure it will sit much better on her when she gets a big chunkier because she is definitely too small for this dress. Still good for twirling!

Yes look at her little legs. I've been photoshopping them for the last few Pattern Revolution posts because they're just so ouchy looking. She's the only one in the family getting eaten alive by mosquitos but they are on the mend because we have Aloe Vera and I've told her if she stops scratching them she'll have Princess Ballerina Legs. So far she has Princess Ballerina knees.

We have a winner. Maybe it was because I actually tried this time. When the review call came for this dress I was like, "okay, this is perfect. it's ruffley. it's a dress. what could go wrong!"
Well nothing went wrong, per se, it sews up like a dream, but for a girl who has never sewn more than about four metres of ruffles it was a special sort of ruffle adventure for me. It's freaking beautiful though. Like even though it was a huge learning curve in gathering a bijillion metres of fabric of TULLE (yeh ever tried pinning tulle?) the look on that little tot's face when I showed it to her. The sound of her happy little gasp from those beautiful little lips as she clutched her hands together like a princess (I swear it just comes naturally to her now).
I had to take it off her so she could eat her soup for dinner but then she wanted it back on so she could go pick flowers for herself. Seriously.

Eep. Edison still loves Star Wars, she still has a crush on Darth Vader and she still fills her pockets with rocks.
One thing has changed though, and that's her little miss independent sense of style. I went through it with her brother, I still am, and you know the story. He'll only wear pants if they're skinny and tight. Or leggings. Miss Eddie? It has to be a pretty dress. Or Pink. Sometimes Purple. But she legit will not put something on without a fight if it's none of the above.
Guess how many pink pretty dresses she owns?
Nada.
I mean it's not like I never bought her any! I didn't deprive my child of a princess ballerina wardrobe but she has more sneakers than pretty ballet flats, and since she grew two inches suddenly this year all her pretty dresses are super inappropriate to wear without leggings. Oh and those leggings? They're like capris now.
Vincent NEVER grew this rapidly. He's just slow and steady and it's pretty rad (watch me eat my words when he shoots up in a few months). Eddie was my Short Round. Her younger cousins are taller than her, her friends are taller than her, our four month old puppy is taller than her. Everyone on the planet is taller than her.
She's still short but the girl has legs for days and I've found myself plunged into Frozen fabric and pretty dresses I never in a million years thought I would ever ever sew. It's not something I am UNWILLING to do, it's just something I am not familiar or confident with. I guess it's how some people view boy sewing!
Either way, when I sewed up this shirt for my review on Pattern Revolution she instantly dissed it. I mean hello, it is neither pink nor a dress. THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU MUM? Head on over to find out how I changed her mind!

So a few months ago I thought how cute it would be to do a Shirley Temple inspired series, just people making Shirley Temple dresses because fashion from the 30s and 40s was so adorable for little girls. It's hard though when you think you're the only one that would really care about such a thing so it just sort of went away because then there the hectic holiday period and lots of silly real life crap to wade through. That was until I randomly started looking at cute Shirley Temple dresses again a few days ago, and then suddenly I realised I'd seen that mass of curls and chubby cheeks, thoselitlte rosebud lips and that cute button nose somewhere else...
I mentioned my idea to a few and then put it up on Instagram just to see what other people might think and to my surprise I am not alone! I'm pretty excited and I have no idea what I'm doing but right now I am announcing that for April we will be celebrating 30 days of Shirley Temple!
I don't want this to be a stressful sewing event, you certainly don't have to be as daft as I am and sew 30 dresses but if you would like to sew just one, or more, please do! At this stage I'm not sure if I will be putting a linky party here or a big round up post later of everyone's dresses or feature them along with my posts whenever someone makes one! The plan is still forming but if you have any ideas or would like to participate in any way please leave a comment or send me an email (max@max-california.com). Even if you just want to spectate you're more than welcome ^_^
If you do want to sew along feel free to do your thing! I'm going to making a few replicas, a few 'inspired by' dresses, maybe I'll do a giveaway with a few of the dresses too! So yeh, what do you think?

I don't think it's just me, but I really think that the older Edison gets the more she looks like Shirley Temple! That was it for me, it was all over, Eddie MUST have some Shirley Temple dresses and since she has become a dress-only, twirly princess ballerina I know that she is going to be pretty pleased with some new pouffy dresses to add to her wardrobe. Although once I get an idea it sort of snowballs and I felt that maybe she should have one for each day of the month. So that;s thirty, thirty Shirley Temple dresses and then I figured, hey, I'm going to blog about it right? May as well make it a THING!
